Why are the colors of the roof different? This is one of the special characteristics of Zhongli Forest Story House.Back in the days, the buildings only had Japanese-style black tiles. However, they were difficult to obtain for repair later on and the residents here used the traditional Taiwanese red tiles for repair. The Li family who lived on the east side of the duplex dormitory always picked up spare and loose tiles from demolished houses. They were always the first to know whenever some families needed to repair roof tiles. They would pick up the spare and stored under their floor to be used for future repair. With their efforts, the look of Japanese-style roof tiles was retained.

Fun trivia knowledge: The combination of Japanese-style black roof tiles and Taiwanese-style red bricks with red roof tiles is a highlight of Zhongli Forest Story House. The Discovery Room (single-family) is speculated to have suffered damage to its roof due to typhoon between 1964 and 1978. The roof structure was changed to Taiwanese traditional red tiles, adopting a more standardized Southern Fujian practice. Different from the Japanese-style roof which tightly connects wooden panels, the Southern Fujian construction practice uses square wooden pieces to support the roof. The square wooden pieces in this type of traditional building serve the dual purposes of wooden strips and panels for Japanese house roof. For the restoration this time, some black tiles in good condition were placed on the side facing Bo-Ai Road.
